PORSCHE’S SECOND-GEN PLUG-IN PANAMERA REVEALED
A plug-in hybrid version of Porsche’s second generation Panamera will serve as the model line’s flagship when it goes on sale in July.
Porsches are usually all about performance and sports car styling, but the new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is more eco-conscious than your typical Porsche, and incorporates electric power to prioritise the environment as much as face-melting pace.
The four-door, four-seat hybrid saloon sticks an electric motor with the four-litre V8 engine from the Panamera Turbo that launched in late 2016 to achieve a total power output of 670bhp and up to 859 Nm of torque.
With this amount of oomph, the all-wheel drive plug-in Panamera can race to 62mph in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 192mph.
Usually, that kind of performance is at the expense of fuel economy, but that’s not the case with the Panamera hybrid, which can hit a Greenpeace-pleasing 97.4mpg on a combined cycle. It can also drive for 31 miles without using a drop of petrol.
The car starts up in this all-electric ‘E-Power’ mode and doesn’t call on the engine until the accelerator pedal is pushed hard enough, or when the battery charge level drops below a certain point.
The hybrid’s high-voltage battery can be fully charged using a 3.6kW charger within six hours, or 2.4 hours with a 7.2kW connection.
Porsche says the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid “underlines the high importance of electromobility” to the brand, with short response times and a high level of comfort, thanks in part to air suspension that comes as standard. It will also be the first plug-in to top a Porsche model line.
Two wheelbases will be offered from launch, with an ‘Executive’ version boasting an extra 150mm between the front and rear axles, in addition to the standard wheelbase Panamera.
The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid will retail for 185,736 euros in its native Germany (that’s £158,300), stretching to 199,183 euros (£169,761) for the longer wheelbase model.
Official UK prices are likely to be confirmed when the car receives a global unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
