FIA/FIM European Finals 2016

This past weekend saw one of Santa Pod’s most impressive Drag Racing events of the year boasting over 250 of Europe’s finest teams. With 300mph Top Fuel Dragsters, 200mph Drag Bikes and over 20 other supporting classes.

Introducing the FIA/FIM European Finals 2016.

Sadly Saturday had to be cancelled due to the rain but I was lucky enough to watch the finals on Sunday which had spectacular racing conditions with warm sunny weather all day. The famous Jet Cars made an appearance alongside monster trucks, stunt shows and air displays. This really was the event to be at.

The first races I witnessed were the heats for the Top Fuel Dragsters where Duncan Micallef went an incredible 312.18mph over the finish line with a time of 3.896. Sadly he was runner-up in the finals later on in the day but nobody else managed to top that speed.

There were 17 events held throughout the FIA/FIM European Finals with the car classes involving: FIA Top Fuel Dragster, European Funny Car Series, FIA Top Methanol Dragsters, FIA Top Methanol Funny Car, FIA Pro Stock Car, FIA / MSA Pro Modified, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Super Pro ET, Pro ET, Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator and Comp Eliminator. The bike classes were FIM Supertwin Bike, FIM Top Fuel Bike, FIM Pro Stock Bike and FIM Super Street Bike Cup.

On top of these events featured the crazy Frenchman Eric Teboul who hurtled down the quarter mile runway on his world record rocket bike going over the speed of 200 mph.

The crowd was also exceptionally fortunate to watch two Jet Dragsters driven by Julian Webb and Santa Pods own Martin Hill in the Fireforce 5 Jet Dragster. The build up for these two machines was immense with flames flying out the back of the jet and the shock waves were so powerful it shook everything around them. I could feel the sheer power of these cars pounding in my chest as they raced down the run way at high speed. These cars are definitely some of the most powerful road cars in the world.

Not only was there a wide assortment to see on the track but also in the air with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight swooping over the grounds with a WWII Lancaster Bomber.

The event really had something for everybody of all ages.

Two records were set, although still awaiting official ratification:

  • FIM Europe Pro Stock Bike ET: 6.978 seconds, Fredrik Fredlund
  • FIM Europe Super Street Bike Cup ET: 6.946 seconds, Steve Venables

Both races averaging a speed of 130 mph over a quarter mile. That’s flying!
