BMW 5 Series Saloon
The new 2017 BMW saloon was revealed last week being the 7th generation of the model. The latest model will go on sale later this month with prices from £36,025.
According to BMW the new model is lighter, safer and more fuel efficient with a ton of new technology poured into it. The car is also slightly longer and wider than previous models with smoother lines that the 7 Series but still clearly a BMW.
The model comes with a wider range of engines to choose from including a plug-in hybrid model which will be available in March. All of the engines are turbocharged so each one is more powerful and efficient than the previous Series 5 models. All of the petrol based engines can also be matched with the xDrive four-wheel drive system.
An improvement in efficiency comes down to the cars lighter weight being up to 100kg lighter depending on the model. Despite the decrease in weight the car is crammed with new technology. The twin circular headlights give the car a sporty look from the side with the 17 inch alloy wheels and fine streamline lines. The M Sport models are closer to the ground as expected with a lower sports suspension.
Even with the sportier look the car is actually more spacious in the rear than previous models with extra headroom making it more comfortable for adults. With a 530-litre boot this is also generously proportioned compared to other saloon cars, with a lower sitting sill making it easier to load bulkier items.
Some of the new technology in the 5 Series includes Remote Control Parking, Remote 3D View systems, Surround View and Apple CarPlay eliminating the need for cables.
With the drive for connectivity amongst every manufacturer the 5 Series is leading the way providing users with Microsoft Office 365. This technology enables users to upload their calendar with appointments and phone numbers to the car system, the sat-nav can then upload the address straight away and allow hand-free direct calling.
Some of the options for extras include a 16-speaker Bowers and Wilkins stereo, rear-seat entertainment sets and a four-zone climate control system.
Currently, only the 5 Series Saloon has been publicized however the Touring estate is likely to quickly follow in early 2017.
